Members of the Lodge celebrated St. George’s Day in style. Wearing red and white dress they assembled for canapes and bubbles at the home of the Lodge’s Charity Steward.
We were welcomed by the host, who gave a brief overview of the life of St George, before we were served with the first course of soup or fish pates. Whilst the service changed to the main course we were entertained by a ‘member of the clergy’ who gave a charitable story in Cockney Rattle and Bang! (rhyming slang).
A main course of either baked ham or hearty beef casserole with dumplings followed and was enjoyed by all. The loyal toast was proposed and the whole company were then enthralled to receive a rhyming Yorkshire description of the Battle of Hastings complete with squawking ‘awk!
To allow for leg stretching all were invited to select from multiple sweet courses, cheeses, and coffee from the self service station.
‘Henry V’ then made an appearance with a rousing “Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more,”
The event drew towards a close with the drawing of the raffle and the answers to the table quiz that had been running from the start. The Worshipful Master concluded by giving a vote of thanks to all involved in providing such a wonderful evening of sumptuous food, fine wine, friendship and entertainment.
Those assembled sang the National Anthem and gave a rousing chorus of Land of Hope and Glory.
Proceeds from the evening will benefit the crews of Eastbourne RNLI.
