The most recent Worshipful Master of the Royal Sovereign Light Lodge 6630 decided to support a very worthy local cause. Being acquainted with some of the founders and being aware of their need, he decided to make the ‘Bexhill Man’s Shed’ his Masters’ Charity of the Year. Not long after he had installed his successor and accompanied by the Charity Steward and another W. Brother, he was invited to attend the formal opening of their new permanent premises in Jameson Mews by the Mayor of Bexhill.

The event was very well attended by local dignitaries and members of the public. The opportunity was taken to present £1661 raised by the Lodge for the Shed.

The involvement of the Lodge was very well received and we were congratulated on our support for a worthy local charity.

The Shed was open house for the occasion and we were encouraged, and surprised, to see the progress that had been made over such a short period of time and the quality and extent of what had been achieved in fitting out numerous workrooms and a social space for refreshment and companionship.

The Bexhill Men’s Shed was established about 18 months ago and now has over 100 members, young and old and both male and female. It provides a valuable social role in combatting loneliness and depression for those with health, social, domestic and other problems in a safe, supervised and welcoming environment together with the opportunity to develop shared technical skills. It has worked on numerous projects including some for local schools and the setting up of the Ukrainian Café.
On start-up, most of its’ hand-tools were used equipment supplied by local benefactors. Many were battery operated, were well worn, and no longer properly held their charge and were in need of replacement.
